Central Cemetery

The Central Cemetery is one of the largest burial grounds in Europe. It covers approx. 170 ha. Visiting the cemetery will take from half an hour to a few hours, depending on what you are interested in.
The Central Cemetery was established on the basis of a small military burial ground dating back to the French and Prussian war of 1870-1871. The construction of the Cemetery was started in February 1900 and at the same time first trees and bushes were planted, some of them were very exotic, which makes the cemetery also an interesting park.
Among interesting items in the cemetery the following are worth recommending:
· neo-Romanesque gate with symmetrical arcades and side passages,
· main neo-Romanesque chapel built between 1900 and 1905,
· a ruin of a Dutch windmill made of red brick, dating back probably to the end of the previous century,
· monuments, e.g. monument of “Those who perished at sea”, the Cross of Katyń, Szczecin 1991, a boulder commemorating the victims of Stalinism and many more.
